About Wayanad

Unique Geographical & Environmental Features

Wayanad, the green paradise nestled among the mountains of the Western Ghats is one of the loveliest hill stations of Kerala. Located at a distance of 76 Kms. from the seashores of Kozhikode, this serene land lies at a height of 700-2100 m above sea level. It is one of the biggest foreign exchange earners of the state, thanks to its cash crops of pepper, cardamom, coffee, tea, spices and other condiments. Wide variety of cash and plantation crops grow abundantly here because of the loamy soil which generally shows wide variation in depth and texture with a very high content of organic matter.

Geographical position of Wayanad is both peculiar and unique. In a district comprising an area of 2126 sq. kms, each of the various destinations within the district is located at a different height from other; this has resulted in varied climatic condition for each one of them. Wayanad district stands on the southern top of the Deccan plateau and its chief glory is the majestic Western Ghats with lofty ridges interspersed with dense forest, tangled jungles and deep valleys, the terrain is rugged. Most of the district is covered by lush greenery and anyone visiting the place is seduced by its charm. As the name suggests Wayanad (Wayal Nadu) is the land of paddy fields, one can see huge expanses of paddy fields here. In sharp contrast to these extensive paddy fields are the hills of the district which are deep blue in sunlight and lie mist covered most of the time. Agriculture in Wayanad is equally divided between paddy and plantation crops. Due to the peculiar terrain, there are east flowing and west flowing rivers. The low hills are full of plantations like tea, coffee, pepper and cardamom while the valleys have a predominance of paddy fields.
